The award was presented by two statewide programs: WorkFirst, which
assists welfare recipients with finding and maintaining employment, and
WorkSource, a joint venture organization that offers resources for business
and job seekers. Solectron's involvement with the WorkFirst program over the
last three years has helped to provide rigorous technology training, coupled
with an English language program, to first-generation immigrants. Qualified
graduates are offered jobs with the site and Solectron has hired 60 graduates
over the past nine months.
"Participating in the WorkFirst program has been a rewarding experience
for everyone involved," said Hieu Dang, the site's general manager. "The
people we educate and hire through the program are excellent employees and
good people, and we are proud to know that we are making a difference in our
community."
Solectron was chosen for the partnership award from more than
100 nominees, and was the only company to be nominated by both
Everett Community College, and the Refugee and Immigrant Forum of Washington's
Snohomish, Whatcom and Skagit counties.
"We appreciate Solectron's efforts as a key partner in the WorkFirst and
WorkSource programs," said Dr. Sylvia Mundy, commissioner of the
Washington State Employment Security Department. "Through our collaboration,
Solectron has helped many refugees receive vital education and training, and
move on to succeed at lucrative jobs that offer advancement."
Four state agencies support WorkFirst: the Employment Security
Department, the Department of Social and Health Services, the State Board for
Community and Technical Colleges and the Office of Trade and Economic
Development. Additional partners in the WorkFirst program include the Refugee
and Immigrant Forum, and Everett Community College.
Solectron's Everett facility offers printed circuit board assemblies
(PCBAs) and customized high-end systems manufacturing for Internet server,
industrial, aerospace, telecommunications and test/measurement markets. The
site's workforce has grown from about 300 employees two years ago to more than
600 today.
