California Association of REALTORS(R) To Promote Homeownership Education Through HomeWords(TM) Program in California Schools

LOS ANGELES, July 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Thousands of teachers and students in
California this fall will have an opportunity to learn about what it takes to
buy or rent a home through HomeWords(TM), a newspaper-based educational
program created by the Los Angeles Times and sponsored by the California
Association of REALTORS(R) (C.A.R.) and Fannie Mae, in cooperation with local
REALTOR(R) associations throughout the state.
Teachers who enroll in the HomeWords(TM) program will receive classroom
sets of newspapers plus teaching materials and lesson plans for several weeks.
To help teachers educate tomorrow's homeowners today, the HomeWords(TM)
program will provide newspaper-based teaching materials that incorporate
language arts skills in line with the California state standards.
"We're excited about the opportunity to reach students in our community
and to contribute in a meaningful way to their education," said C.A.R.
President Toby Bradley. "It is our hope that through the HomeWords(TM)
program, teachers, students and their parents will have a better understanding
of the process involved in buying, selling, or renting a home and realize that
homeownership is an attainable goal."
As part of the HomeWords(TM) curriculum, students will consider the
differences between what they want and what they need, particularly with
respect to buying, selling, or renting a home; understand how location plays a
part in the cost of a home; learn how their behavior with money could affect
their lifestyles and ability to become homeowners in the years to come; and
learn about the choices and trade-offs that are made when cities try to meet
housing objectives while addressing concerns about growth.
California REALTORS(R) and their local REALTOR(R) associations throughout
the state will have an opportunity to support the HomeWords(TM) program by
hosting awards presentations, serving as judges for essay contests, providing
prizes that would encourage students to enter the writing contests, or acting
as guest speakers in classrooms or at school assemblies for career-opportunity
discussions.
The HomeWords(TM) program will run from September 2003 through March 2004
statewide in communities served by six California newspapers. In addition to
the Los Angeles Times, participating newspapers include the San Francisco
Chronicle, Fresno Bee, Sacramento Bee, San Jose Mercury News and San Diego
Union-Tribune.
Additional information on the HomeWords(TM) program and C.A.R.'s
