American Home Products Corporation Announces the Appointment of Richard L. Carrion to the Board Of Directors

    MADISON, N.J., July 20 /PRNewswire/ -- American Home Products Corporation
(NYSE: AHP) announced today the appointment of Richard L. Carrion, 47, to the
Company's Board of Directors.
    Mr. Carrion is Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Banco
Popular, the leading banking institution in Puerto Rico, and of Popular, Inc.,
Banco Popular's holding company.
    Committed to the overall development of Puerto Rico, Mr. Carrion is
President of the Committee for the Economic Development of Puerto Rico and
actively participates in the boards of several other civic organizations.  He
is a member of the Executive Committee of the Puerto Rico Banking Association
and the President of BPPR Foundation.  He is a Board member of Verizon,
formerly Bell Atlantic Corporation, and of Telecommunicaciones de Puerto Rico,
Inc.
    Mr. Carrion holds a bachelor's degree from the Wharton School of Finance
and Commerce at the University of Pennsylvania, and a master's degree in
Management Information Systems from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
