Genoa, Illinois Company Sends Employees, Mobile Telephone Switch To New York City to Support Disaster Relief Efforts

GENOA, Ill., Sept. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- AG Communication Systems has
deployed a mobile emergency telephone switch to New York City to support
Verizon Communications, the company's largest customer, as it restores
telephone services in the area after the World Trade Center disaster. The
Mobile Emergency Restoration Trailer (MERT) from Genoa arrived in New York
last week.
The mobile unit is staged just blocks from "ground zero" as six employees
from Genoa and others from AG Communication Systems upgrade the switch's
capabilities beyond the 4,000 lines of service it was designed to provide.
"Last Tuesday afternoon, Verizon Communications and the Federal Emergency
Management Agency (FEMA) requested that we dispatch the mobile switch to
Manhattan as soon as possible," said Lyle Williams, manager of methods
engineering and operations support for AG Communication Systems. "Thanks to a
team effort by employees, we had equipment on the road to New York within
24 hours."
The mobile unit contains a complete switching center capable of providing
emergency telephone service to subscribers. The AG Communication Systems'
mobile switch was last deployed in 1998 when floodwaters knocked out a local
telephone switching facility in Amesville, Ohio.
AG Communication Systems, a subsidiary of Lucent Technologies, employs
more than 500 people at its manufacturing facility in Genoa, located
approximately 60 miles northwest of Chicago. The Phoenix-based company offers
service providers advanced network-based solutions, including circuit and
packet switching, voice-over-Internet protocol (VoIP) and IP Centrex, call
center and integrated access products. For additional information, visit the
