Minimally Invasive Sling Procedure Offers Immediate Relief, Brief Recovery
Period for Thousands of Men
COLUMBIA, S.C., Oct. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Steven Hulecki, M.D., a leading
urologist at Lexington Medical Center, today presented to medical
professionals a new device for the treatment of urinary incontinence in men.
The Straight-In(TM) Male Sling System, designed and marketed by American
Medical Systems, is a minimally invasive, same-day surgery procedure that has
resulted in a high initial success rate. The procedure requires minimal
recovery time, allowing men to resume a normal, active lifestyle.

"The good news is there are solutions for male incontinence," said Hulecki
as he presented his perspective to attendees at the 18th Annual Meeting of the
National Association for Continence (NAFC), held in Atlanta, Ga.
October 13-14.
The sling procedure augments the normal sphincter function, providing an
enhanced level of continence. The system uses a transperineal approach to
place a sling below the urethra to provide a bolstering effect to help restore
voiding function.
"Incontinence is a distressing and isolating condition that can have a
devastating effect on a patient's work and emotional health," says Hulecki.
He urged practitioners to "channel untreated patients to urologists and those
who have the required surgical skills to achieve optimum results" so patients
can regain their self-esteem, confidence and lifestyle. "Patients suffering
from incontinence avoid going out in public," he added. "For fear of
embarrassment, they avoid going out to dinner, attending church or simply
picking up their grandchildren."
According to Dr. Hulecki, an estimated 2.5 million men suffer from
incontinence in the United States. Approximately 500,000 of these men suffer
from stress incontinence, often a result of complications from prostate
surgery. He said an estimated 5 - 10% of men become incontinent each year due
to complications from these procedures.
Currently male incontinence may be treated with artificial urinary
sphincters, bulking agents, biofeedback, medications and slings.
