WARRENDALE, PA USA
PITTSBURGH, Nov. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Marconi (Nasdaq: MONI; London), a
global supplier of advanced communications solutions, announced today that two
parallel high capacity Marconi optical networks are to be installed north to
south across Malaysia as the country commits to Marconi's dense wave division
multiplexing (DWDM) optical technology to meeting its growing internet
demands.

The two new national networks, designed to provide extremely high
bandwidth capacity for internet users, are being set up by Telekom Malaysia,
which has placed orders worth more than $10 million with Marconi for a
comprehensive package of equipment, installation, training, commissioning and
ongoing technical support.
The networks will be used by Telekom Malaysia primarily for its Internet
business, to provide high-speed access for the rapidly increasing number of
users going on line.
The system will take full advantage of Marconi's leading role in the
development of DWDM technology, which multiplies the carrying capacity of each
optical fiber strand by splitting light into dozens of separate wavelengths.
Each wavelength is capable of transmitting digital information at very high
rates.
Giacomo Licata, managing director for Marconi Malaysia, said: "The
Malaysian internet project demonstrates our ability to deliver total DWDM
network solutions anywhere in the world. We are providing Telekom Malaysia
with a turnkey package that includes full technical support from our engineers
in Malaysia, plus training for the company's staff to equip them to manage the
system long-term. This project is the latest in a long and increasingly
valuable line of contracts for Marconi in Malaysia, which is using advanced
communications to create a high-value, knowledge-based society."
In 1999, Marconi won a $60 million three-year frame contract, with Telekom
Malaysia for a new high-speed SDH (synchronous digital hierarchy) network.
The initiative is a key part of the Malaysian government's Vision 2020
program, which aims to make the nation a world center for new cyber lifestyle
and business models.
