Bearsden Receives $1.7 MM in Research Grants

ASTON, Pa., Nov. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- The following was issued today by
Bearsden Bio, Inc.:

Bearsden Bio, Inc. has received one Phase II SBIR grant and one CRADA from
the US National Institutes of Health. The funding is going towards the study
of its kainate receptor antagonist (SYM 2081) in chronic pain and the
understanding of the role of glutamate receptors in Alzheimer's Disease and
Down's Syndrome.
The SBIR grant focuses on the treatment of acute and chronic pain with SYM
2081 and on the compound's bioavailability, pharmacokinetic and toxicity
profile. The CRADA will test the effects of receptor subtype specific
antagonists in nerve transmission and animal models of diseases, such as
Alzheimer's and Down's. The three compounds that are specific for the
glutamate receptor subtypes are SYM 2081 for the kainate receptor, SYM 2198
for the AMPA receptor and ACPC for the NMDA receptor.
Our goal is to progress the project through preclinical testing to the
clinical stage and then partner for the clinical development. We are
continuing the work on glutamate receptors and brain. We are currently
talking to potential corporate partners and discussing the co-development of
the pain compound as well as the depression compound through the clinic.
