Internal surfaces of the devices' cylinders are now coated with a
micro-thin (60 millionths of an inch) layer of Parylene(TM), which has been
demonstrated in bench testing to add millions of fold and tube wear stress
cycles before detectable wear. The product enhancement was approved by Health
Canada's Therapeutic Products Programme on November 27, 2000, and is currently
under review by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration.
Hans Neisz, AMS vice president for research and development, noted that,
"AMS devices have achieved the highest patient satisfaction ratings in the
industry. This enhancement underlines our commitment to continually improve
our entire product line. We expect this feature to further reduce the small
incidence of revisions with our penile devices and thus interest patients and
cost-conscious healthcare systems worldwide."
Parylene coating is a vapor deposition process applied to
non-tissue-contacting surfaces only. Completely contained within the device,
it offers a significant improvement to the product longevity while maintaining
excellent functionality. Parylene compliments the introduction in Canada of
the InhibiZone(TM) surface treatment for AMS 700 Series devices for ED.
InhibiZone is intended to inhibit growth of bacteria on tissue-contacting
surfaces. InhibiZone(TM) was introduced in November.
American Medical System developed the first inflatable penile implant in
1973 and now offers a portfolio of devices addressing various male needs.
More than 200,000 of the company's devices have been successfully implanted
and their use is widely accepted as one of the most effective long-term
treatments for erectile dysfunction.
American Medical Systems, headquartered in Minneapolis, is a medical
technology company dedicated to surgeon-choice urological solutions for male
and female incontinence, erectile dysfunction, and obstructions related to
prostate disease. For additional information on AMS or its products visit
