Featuring Classic Performances, Archival Clips and New Interviews
Jeff Bridges Hosts
NEW YORK, Dec. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- VH1's "100 Greatest Albums of Rock &
Roll" ranks rock's most important and influential LPs of all time in a
five-hour, five-night special premiering Monday, January 15, through Friday,
January 19, from 10:00-11:00 p.m. (ET/PT). Each hour repeats the following
night so that the special airs in its entirety on Friday beginning at 6:00
p.m. and ending with the debut final hour of top 20 albums at 10 p.m.
Following in the tradition of VH1's critically acclaimed "100 Greatest"
hit specials, "100 Greatest Albums of Rock & Roll" features never-before-seen
performance footage, rare photos, archival clips, and new interviews with the
artists themselves, who talk about the effect and influence of rock's rich
history of LP releases from the age of vinyl to the digital CD era. Jeff
Bridges hosts the special which spans the decades beginning with Elvis'
earliest Sun Studios recording sessions in the '50s, to the rise of the album-
as-concept in the freewheeling '60s, through the album-oriented music styles
that dominated the '70s, and beyond.
Highlights include:
* The Beatles lead all artists with five albums. The Rolling Stones and
Bob Dylan each placed four LPs on the list, and seven other artists
each notched three albums in the tally, including Led Zeppelin,
The Who, Aretha Franklin, Jimi Hendrix and Michael Jackson.
* The earliest recording is Elvis Presley's "The Sun Sessions" (recorded
1954-55 but not released as an album until 1976); the earliest release
is Miles Davis' "Kind of Blue" (1955). The most recent release is
Lauryn Hill's "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill" (1998).
* The bulk of the albums on the list were released in the 1970s (42),
followed by the '60s (29) and the '80s (20).
* Women (or groups led by women) accounted for 15 of the top 100,
including three by Aretha Franklin alone, and releases from
Dusty Springfield, Joni Mitchell, Fleetwood Mac, The Pretenders,
Tina Turner, Madonna and Lauryn Hill, among others.
* Eighteen artists or groups made unforgettable first impressions,
including eponymous debut discs by The Doors, Led Zeppelin,
The Ramones, The B-52s and The Pretenders, plus The Jimi Hendrix
Experience's "Are You Experienced?," REM's "Murmur," Patti Smith
Group's "Horses," Guns N' Roses' "Appetite for Destruction," and Pearl
Jam's "Ten," among others.
* Derek and the Dominos' debut release "Layla & Other Assorted Love
Songs" was the supergroup's only recording, while the Sex Pistols
famously self-destructed after their first studio album, "Never Mind
the Bollocks Here's The Sex Pistols"
To select the "100 Greatest Albums of Rock & Roll," VH1 sent ballots to
more than 500 musicians and rock journalists. Among those artists casting
their votes were Jackson Browne, Elvis Costello, Neil Finn (Crowded House),

Rhodes (Duran Duran), Kate Pierson and Fred Schneider (The B-52s), The Mamas &
the Papas' Michelle Phillips, Britney Spears, No Doubt's Gwen Stefani and Tony
Kanal, and Sly Stone.
Interviews include Mary J. Blige, Moby, Smokey Robinson, Elvis Costello,
Art Garfunkel, Stevie Wonder, Chuck D (Public Enemy), Gwen Stefami and Tony
