PORTLAND, Ore., Dec. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Tactica(TM) Corporation today
announced that version 2.1 of its Caprera(TM) software product will provide
comprehensive support for Microsoft integration standards, including ActiveX
technology. With Caprera version 2.1 available immediately, Tactica is the
first company to extend ActiveX technology to transaction-oriented mobile and
remote database applications.
"By integrating ActiveX and OFTP technologies within Caprera, Tactica is
well positioned to complement Microsoft's enterprise strategy. Caprera's OFTP
capabilities will reliably extend the reach of Microsoft's enterprise
initiatives, like Viper and Denali, beyond office walls to the external
organization," said Mr. Sunil Pande, vice president of Marketing at Tactica.
OFTP systems include relational and legacy databases on the corporate
LAN, a forms-based front-end application on mobile and remote computers, and
the Caprera server software to integrate these two components.
Introduced earlier this year, Caprera remains the only programmable OFTP
server product available to the software-development community. The open
architecture of Caprera provides a framework within which existing back-end
database products, front-end GUI application development tools, and WAN-based
messaging can be quickly and easily integrated into a single mobile/remote
OFTP application. With the support for ActiveX included in version 2.1 of
Caprera, users can integrate an OFTP application from "off-the-shelf" products
more easily than ever before.
Just as local-area network (LAN)-based On-Line Transaction Processing
(OLTP) client/server applications have helped organizations become more
efficient though better access to shared information, so have OFTP
applications. They extend these same benefits to mobile workers, remote
offices, business partners, and customers over wide-area network (WAN)
infrastructure such as telephone land lines, cellular telephones, wireless,
value-added networks (VANs), and the Internet. This makes it possible to
extend the automation of business processes to an organization's external
participants and to efficiently integrate the tasks performed by them into the
business processes of the enterprise.
Examples of OFTP applications include those used by visiting nurses to
record and review patient information in a patient's home, by insurance
adjusters to access damage information on-site, and by delivery drivers to
record and track package deliveries.
To ensure seamless integration with third-party products, Tactica has
established development, licensing, and channel relationships with several
vendors. These vendors include RSA for data encryption technology; Raptor for
Internet firewalls; Informix, Computer Associates, IBM, Oracle, Sybase, Raima,
Information Builders, and INTERSOLV for database, database driver, and
database gateways; and IBM for workflow and SmallTalk-based development. Also
included are Shiva, IBM, ARDIS, Motorola, and RAM Mobile Data for remote
access and messaging technologies -- including TCP/IP stacks, SLIP/PPP, and
E-mail -- to support WAN infrastructure. In addition to these products,
Caprera supports industry standards, including DDE, ActiveX, and ODBC. Caprera
can also be used with forms-based, GUI front-end development products like
Visual Basic, Power Builder, and Centura as well as with existing Web browsers
and Web servers.
The Caprera software product is currently available for Intel x86/Windows
NT, Intel x86/OS/2, and IBM RS6000/AIX platforms. Client platforms supported
include Windows 3.1 and Windows 95. Support for HP UX and Sun Solaris server
platforms will be announced early next year. Support for various PDA platforms
and embedded clients, including point-of-sale terminals, will also be
available in 1997.
