Survey of 900 Companies Segmented by Industry, Size, Vendor
SAN FRANCISCO, Feb. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Ferris Research has completed the
most comprehensive survey to date of business email systems, interviewing
more than 900 companies around the world about their preferred vendor,
upgrade patterns, plans for migration, and what they pay for their
software.
The report, available at http://www.ferris.com, looks at small (1-99
employees), medium (100-999 employees) and large (1000+ employees)
organizations in the following vertical markets: financial services,
government, manufacturing, healthcare, telecommunications, education, and
computer-related. Six hundred and fifty-four of the respondents are based
in North America, the remainder being primarily in Europe.
"This is by far the largest survey ever done on messaging systems, and
we think the results will be of great interest to any vendor looking for
real data about the nature of the market and where it's going," said David
Ferris, president and senior analyst. "The reality is that vendors often
know how many total units of a particular product they've sold, but
breaking down that data by customer size and vertical is often beyond their
reach, as is understanding upgrade or migration patterns. This report gives
vendors raw numbers about market penetration of products and product
versions, as well as valuable insight into user behavior. The data will
help them develop their product roadmaps and strategies more effectively,
as well as provide IT departments with insight into the plans of their
peers."
Survey Highlights
Microsoft Exchange:
-- Exchange has a 65 percent market share across all organizations.
-- Exchange has a 75 percent penetration in healthcare businesses with
more than 5,000 employees. Exchange does very well in
telecommunications industries with at least 1,000 employees, where it
has a 90 percent penetration.
-- Almost all organizations with up to 49 employees are on Exchange 2007.
More than 40 percent of Exchange seats in organizations with more than
10,000 employees are on Exchange 2003. Around 5 percent of
Exchange-using organizations with up to 500 employees are on Exchange
2003. Exchange 5.5 has almost disappeared.
Notes/Domino:
-- Notes/Domino has about 10 percent market share across all
organizations.
-- Notes/Domino is at its strongest in manufacturing, and financial
industries. It has greater than 55 percent market share in
manufacturing industries with at least 5,000 employees. Among
healthcare industries with at least 2,500 employees, it has a roughly
25 percent market share.
-- Some 55 percent of Notes/Domino seats in organizations with fewer than
100 employees are on version 7. Fewer than 5 percent of Notes/Domino
seats in organizations with at least 1,000 employees are on version 5.
POP/IMAP:
-- Internal and hosted POP/IMAP solutions are used in about 15 percent of
organizations of all sizes.
-- POP/IMAP products are more popular in education and technical
consulting than in other industries.
-- Five percent of large organizations use a POP/IMAP-based email system.
-- The survey does not support the contention that small- and medium-sized
organizations are migrating from on-premises software to hosted
services (which would usually be classed as POP/IMAP solutions).
GroupWise:
-- Novell GroupWise has a negligible overall market share overall.
-- About 10 percent of users are on version 6.
-- GroupWise does particularly well in financial services and government
sectors, where the organization has between 100 and 999 employees. In
those sectors, it has a 10 percent and 15 percent market share,
respectively.
Data is also provided for more specific organization sizes, such as
10-49 employees, 1,000-2,499 employees, and 100,000+ employees.
