"Announcing a further strong wave of new LiMo members and 18 initial
LiMo handsets from 7 vendors at Mobile World Congress demonstrates that
LiMo has attracted wide industry engagement since its launch one year ago,"
said Morgan Gillis, executive director of LiMo Foundation. "With the lineup
of prestigious mobile industry leaders and innovators that now stands
behind the platform, LiMo is positioned at the heart of an open mobile
ecosystem that will connect developers with mobile consumers across all
markets. LiMo's open approach and broad SDK strategy recognizes the diverse
strengths and talents of existing open developer communities -- empowering
a diverse set of developers to innovate successfully within the mobile
communications marketplace."
LiMo's SDK suite will roll out from H2 2008 and provide common
Eclipse-based tooling environments for supporting widespread development of
software for LiMo handsets coming to market from Q4 2008. It will enable
mobile software suppliers to concentrate on developing their own
value-added technologies, while enabling developers to explore and work
with advanced programming models within an open-source environment. The SDK
suite is being readied by LiMo board members, including ACCESS CO. LTD,
Aplix Corporation, Azingo, Motorola and Wind River, and further strategic
SDK partners will be announced in the near future.
"The APIs for the first release of the LiMo Platform(TM) were recently
made available to all mobile developers, and the R1 LiMo Platform itself is
scheduled to be completed in March 2008," commented Hankil Yoon, vice
president of Linux Platform and Devices at Samsung and chairperson of
LiMo's Architecture Council, who is leading the SDK initiative. "Today's
announcement is yet another positive step for the LiMo Foundation and the
entire mobile community as our SDK strategy will attract significant
developer engagement and exposure to the LiMo Platform, thereby stimulating
a new wave of innovation in mobile applications, services and
next-generation user experiences."
"ACCESS has accumulated extensive experience in the provision of SDKs
and technical support for large developer communities," said Toru Arakawa,
president and chief executive officer of ACCESS. "We have recently joined
the Board of LiMo Foundation because we can see rapid industry wide take up
of the LiMo Platform and we intend to make strategic contributions that
will benefit the whole LiMo ecosystem--starting with a comprehensive Native
SDK."
"Aplix is very excited by the progress LiMo Foundation has made," said
John Rizzo, vice president, Technology Strategy of Aplix Corporation.
"Aplix's goals are to meet the full needs of Java ECO system and Java
runtime environments that are required by commercial LiMo products."
"The LiMo Foundation selected Azingo to provide advanced mobile Linux
technologies to power its Common Integration Environment (CIE) and now
we're pleased to be extending these technologies to power LiMo's SDK," said
Mahesh Veerina, CEO of Azingo. "Azingo Mobile is an innovative and
comprehensive mobile platform based on LiMo's software that is achieving
broad industry support. We will leverage our innovations to help LiMo
provide an SDK that can help developers create new applications for web
2.0, music, video, vivid graphics and more."
"As a founding member of the LiMo Foundation and a leader in
Linux-based mobile devices, Motorola is proud to contribute our technical
knowledge in platform and tool creation to support the development of these
SDKs--including driving the requirements behind the WebKit SDK," said
Christy Wyatt, Vice President, Software Platforms & Ecosystem, Motorola.
"Wind River is pleased that LiMo Foundation will extend the Common
Integration Environment (CIE) based on Wind River's commercial Linux
technology to enable LiMo's SDK suite for application developers," said
Jason Whitmire, general manager of mobile solutions at Wind River. "LiMo's
CIE provides the foundation for integrating and managing platform software
contributions, and Wind River will work with LiMo Core Members to provide
additional tools to facilitate integration and management of application
code contributions from OEMs, ISVs and the open source community to support
LiMo's rapidly evolving mobile phone stack and ecosystem."
Launched in January 2007, LiMo Foundation is open to all vendors and
service providers in the mobile communications marketplace, including
device manufacturers, operators, chipset manufacturers, independent
software vendors, integrators and third-party developers. For more
