ANAHEIM, Calif., Feb. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- For most kids, the bell
signaling the end of school means a boring afternoon watching television or
struggling to complete their homework. Tiger Woods Learning Center (TWLC)
students, however, squirm with excitement since the bell signifies going to
classes that allow them to design and edit a newsletter, create their own
movies, analyze DNA and fingerprints, or construct and launch rockets. This
session, some students were even able to show off their golf skills to
professional athletes, and witness Tiger Woods capturing the trophy after a
red-hot week of play at the Buick Invitational. To obtain an application
for membership, visit http://www.twlc.org or call (714)-765-8000.
To remain on the cutting edge of technology while keeping lessons
relevant and exciting for students, the TWLC Computer Clubhouse is
continuously implementing new programs and workshops. During the
after-school Winter 1 session, the workshops focused on audio/video
software and hardware, including software workshops for Apple computers
such as iPhoto and GarageBand. Beginning in February, other workshops
include podcasting with GarageBand, Green Screening, and Edit like the Pro
with Adobe Premiere Pro. Newsletter Club students are also continuing to
create their very own Newsletter, Tiger Times. The club, which meets every
other Wednesday, is busy designing, researching, interviewing and writing
the content for their next issue which will be distributed on Family Night.
Students use Microsoft Publisher to create the newsletter and give it a
professional look.
The Career Exploration/Preparation Program (CEP/CPP), are seven-week
sessions designed to help students in grades 7-12 explore the ways their
personal interests translate into college study and careers. This quarter
more than 450 students are enrolled in CEP with classes ranging from Jazz
appreciation, to marine biology and robotics engineering. Students in the
communications class are working with Mac Notebooks and iLife Software to
create a movie titled, "I Have Everything," which emphasizes their
appreciation for family, education and what they have in their lives.
The CPP also hosted a Town Hall Meeting in conjunction with the
Hispanic Scholarship Fund to provide students from local schools and their
families information about the importance of a college education. The
presenters discussed, in both English and Spanish, preparing for college
admission, financial aid and scholarship opportunities. Programs are open
to students throughout Orange County and applications can be downloaded
from http://www.twlc.org or picked up onsite.
The Career Orientation Program (COP), a forensic science program that
reinforces lessons from the classroom and applies them to everyday life,
allows children in 5th grade, who attend single-track school in the Anaheim
school district, to see firsthand the connection between education and
success. There are currently 12 schools participating in the two-week
forensic science program, and 10 schools taking part in the marine science,
one-week program.
Additionally, the 5th grade teachers are provided with professional
development courses. Currently, the main focus of the program is a hands-on
physical science unit, but the Learning center also offers classroom
observation time, overviews on the 40 Development Assets (positive youth
development) and technology integration. During the second week, the
professional development program focuses on digital storytelling and how
teachers can integrate it into their curriculum.
Students in the Golf Program met soccer heroes Paulo Nagamura, Rodrigo
Lopez and Anthony Hamilton, three professional soccer players from team
Chivas USA. The athletes spent time answering questions, participating in
an interactive soccer exhibit, and listening to golf pointers from TWLC
students while hitting golf balls on the driving range.
200 K-8th grade students from the Newport-Mesa Unified School District
visited the TWLC as part of Total Golf Adventures. Students participated in
a TWLC Golf Clinic, rotating between four golf stations and two TWLC
interactive experience stations for an exciting afternoon of golf and
prizes, with a raffle consisting of hats, shirts, balls, clubs and gloves.
One lucky grand prize fourth-grade winner took home a Nike golf set.
Tiger Woods and Buick hosted 40 students enrolled in the golf program
at TWLC at the 2008 Buick Invitational at Torrey Pines Golf Course in La
Jolla. The students were invited to enjoy lunch in the Buick hospitality
suite, sit in a special VIP section at the 18th hole to watch the
tournament, and were able to watch Tiger sink the winning putt and even get
a photo op with Tiger and the trophy. Additionally, TWLC students were the
standard bearers at the Target World Challenge golf tournament at Sherwood
Country Club in Thousand Oaks.
Other happenings at the TWLC
In partnership with The Princeton Review, the CPP held their first-ever
SAT practice test for 10th and 11th grade students, providing students an
opportunity to take the test as a practice without their scores being sent
to colleges. The 67 participants were given a comprehensive, individual
score report highlighting their strengths and weaknesses, as well as advice
from a Princeton Review instructor on test-taking and some effective
strategies for maximizing scores and test preparation.
On January 21, 2008, the TWLC hosted an event with Tiger Woods to
announce the launch of the Fist Pump Challenge, an online contest designed
to help young people identify and share their greatest achievements. As
part of the Challenge, Tiger is asking young people everywhere to share
their own Fist Pump Moments with the world via
http://www.tigerwoodsfoundation.org. To share their Fist Pump Moment,
children are asked, with their parents' permission, to visit
http://www.tigerwoodsfoundation.org, and submit a video including their
name, age, Fist Pump Moment, significance of that experience, and end with
a fist pump. Those without video access can e-mail their Fist Pump Moment
for posting. Video and written entries will be voted on by website visitors
with prizes going to the highest ranked submissions. Prizes include iPods,
Tiger Woods '08 EA Video Games, and gift cards. Details on video content
and challenge rules are available on tigerwoodsfoundation.org.
