Pet Food Institute Says Its Reassuring Message to Consumers Has Been Validated by FDA

 Trade group is encouraged by discovery of substance suspected as cause of
                              pet food recall

    WASHINGTON, March 23 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Duane Ekedahl,
president of the Pet Food Institute (PFI), said that the trade
association's reassuring message to consumers during the current recall was
validated by the Food and Drug Administration in a press briefing late
today.
    Dr. Stephen Sundloff, director of the FDA Center for Veterinary
Medicine, said in a press briefing this afternoon, "If the [pet food]
product is not subject to the recall, they [pet owners] should feel
confident feeding those products...Pet owners should continue to buy [pet
food] products outside the recall."
    Since the recall was announced, PFI has urged calm to consumers and
expressed confidence in those pet food products not included on the recall
list.
    In other developments, Ekedahl addressed the announcement made by the
New York Commissioner of Agriculture earlier today that a substance was
identified in recalled pet food products analyzed by the state agency that
could be the cause of the reported health problems: aminopterin.
    "We are encouraged that the causative agent may have been found.
Although today's announcement is preliminary, it appears to be a turning
point in the investigation because we may now have the cause. We await the
findings of the Food and Drug Administration and the U.S. Department of
Agriculture," said Duane Ekedahl.
    Over 99% of pet food products in the marketplace were not impacted by
the recall. Dry pet food is not included in the recall, nor are semi-moist
or canned/pouched products that are not "in gravy." The recall is limited
to specific brand products of wet "in gravy" style cat and dog food in cans
and pouches listed at http://www.fda.gov.
