DALLAS, April 1 /PRNewswire/ -- The most powerful music radio station in
Texas returned to the airwaves today as the "Mighty 1190" and began playing
10,000 Beatles songs in row, songs that helped define it as one of the most
influential AM stations in the nation. The 50,000-watt KXFR-AM 1190 -- the
radio site of the historic "Mighty 1190" -- will be All Beatles All The Time
and essentially commercial free until it introduces a unique new music format
that will be locally produced and operated later this spring.
"We're bringing the 'Mighty 1190' back with new call letters and a tribute
to its heritage as the definitive Top-40 station for much of the past fifty
years in North Texas," said Ron Unkefer, chairman and chief executive officer
of First Broadcasting, the Dallas-based company that operates the station from
studios in the Dallas Arts District. "By playing All Beatles All The Time, we
want to recapture the sound that defined an era and entertained millions of
north Texans."
In January, First Broadcasting signed a Local Marketing Agreement (LMA) to
take over station operations from Clear Channel Radio. At midnight, the
station switched from sports programming to All Beatles All The Time as the
new again "Mighty 1190."
The "Mighty 1190" came of age in the 1950s, featuring a mix of Top-40
hits, clever promotions, 24-hour news and high profile disc jockeys, a
combination imitated throughout the country. In 1959, the station began
broadcasting at the maximum allowable 50,000 watts of power during daytime
hours, reaching throughout North Texas and portions of southern Oklahoma. It
was the top rated local radio station from the mid-fifties to the seventies.
"The new music format promises to be as fun and as innovative as the
original 'Mighty 1190' was at its time," Unkefer said.
