HARRISBURG, Pa., April 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Governor Edward G. Rendell today
proclaimed April as Financial Education month, encouraging all Pennsylvania
citizens, parents, teachers, community leaders, and others to seek out ways to
improve their own personal finance habits and to increase their awareness of
saving, investing and credit choices.
"Pennsylvania is a national leader in its efforts to promote financial
education," Governor Rendell said. "We are dedicated to helping individuals
gather information and gain the skills necessary to take control of their
personal finances."
The Office of Financial Education was established last April to coordinate
financial education statewide as part of our landmark education efforts. This
spring, the OFE will launch a new Web site to help Pennsylvanians learn more
about different financial topics and educational resources in their
communities.

PROCLAMATION
FINANCIAL EDUCATION MONTH
April 2005
WHEREAS, financial education is critical to achieving personal financial
goals which allow Pennsylvania to attain the highest quality of life available
in this commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, many young people fail in the management of their first consumer
credit experience, establish bad financial management habits, and stumble
financially, learning by trial and error; and
WHEREAS, college students double their average credit card debt and triple
the number of credit cards in their wallets from the time they arrive on
campus until graduation; and
WHEREAS, almost half of all parents say they do not set a good example
when it comes to handling their own money and are not capable of properly
teaching their children; and
WHEREAS, a greater understanding and familiarity with financial markets
and institutions by Pennsylvania's citizens will lead to increased economic
activity and growth; and
WHEREAS, Pennsylvania is a national leader is promoting financial
education among its citizens through the commonwealth's newly founded Office
of Financial Education; and
WHEREAS, the Pennsylvania Jump$tart Coalition, a public-private
partnership, is working to improve financial education in kindergarten through
twelfth grade; and
WHEREAS, these endeavors are worthy of support and cooperation for the
benefit of the citizens and consumers of the commonwealth to protect their
financial future.
THEREFORE, in special recognition of the importance of expanding financial
education for Pennsylvania's citizens, I, Edward G. Rendell, Governor of the
Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, do hereby proclaim April 2005 as Financial
Education Month and encourage all Pennsylvania citizens, parents, teachers,
community leaders, and others to seek out ways to improve their own personal
finance habits.
