DALLAS, April 10 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Belo Corp. (NYSE: BLC)
announced today that KMOV-TV, the Company's CBS affiliate in St. Louis, has
won the National Association of Broadcasters Education Foundation (NABEF)
2007 Service to America Partnership Award, the highest public service honor
given in the broadcast television industry. The honor is awarded to
television stations that demonstrate an ongoing commitment to public
service in their local communities.
KMOV was recognized for its partnership with Variety, the Children's
Charity of St. Louis, donating airtime to raise funds for children in the
Greater St. Louis region with physical and mental disabilities who need
medical equipment, speech equipment and all types of prostheses. Since the
partnership began 20 years ago, KMOV's support has been unwavering and has
helped raise more than $48 million for the program. In 2006, the
partnership was reinvented, and in addition to traditional programming, a
two-hour primetime special entitled "For the Love of the Kids" aired. This
component was the heart of the entry and helped to generate a record amount
of contributions totaling $3.4 million.
The NABEF's Service to America Awards recognize the outstanding
innovative and successful partnerships between radio and television
broadcasters and organizations working for the improvement of the
community. Among the criteria, judges consider the scope, longevity and
effectiveness of the partnership. Partners tend to include nonprofits,
commercial enterprises, government agencies or a combination of multiple
organizations.
"We are thrilled to receive this highly-coveted award from NABEF," said
Allan Cohen, KMOV president/General Manager. "It is an honor for the staff
and our community partner to be recognized for a program that benefits so
many children in St. Louis, and we are committed to this partnership for
years to come."
The award marks the sixth Service to America Award earned by Belo
television stations since 1998 when NABEF introduced the awards, and the
third by KMOV. In 2001, the station won a Service to Children Award for its
"Do the Right Thing" program, a partnership with the St. Louis-area police
departments that recognizes children for their exemplary actions, and, in
2004, KMOV won a Service to Children Award for its "At the Zoo" program
that provides a behind- the-scenes look at what it takes to operate the St.
Louis Zoo.
Dunia Shive, Belo's president and chief operating officer, said, "KMOV
has had a long-standing commitment to the St. Louis community, and this
award is a tribute to their day-to-day dedication. The KMOV team
exemplifies the standard of excellence that all Belo television stations
share."
KMOV will receive the award at a ceremony in Washington, D.C. on
Monday, June 11, 2007.
