WASHINGTON, April 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Hundreds of family farmers and rural
and urban community leaders with National People's Action (NPA) are protesting
at the home of Charles F. Conner, Deputy Secretary of the United States
Department of Agriculture, today. The protest at Conner's home, located at 310
Mansion Drive in Alexandria, Va., will occur at 4:15 p.m.
"We are here today to tell Conner and the USDA to end corporate welfare
and stop balancing the budget on the backs of family farmers and millions of
hardworking, low-income families," said Barb Kalbach, of Adair/Madison
Regional Citizens for Community Improvement. She is a family farmer from
Dexter, Iowa.
Conner will be asked to stop supporting policies that benefit corporate
factory farms and start supporting family farms, hardworking urban families
and food stamp and food nutrition programs. USDA has consistently supported
policies that dole out taxpayer dollars to corporate factory farms, destroy
family farms and cut food assistance programs that help America's neediest
families.
"Mr. Conner has rebuffed written invitations from NPA to meet with its
national leadership as a part of its 34th annual conference," said Brenda
LaBlanc, an NPA co-chair and grandmother from Iowa. "We demand the promise of
democracy now! Government agencies need to listen to us, not corporate special
interests."
SPECIAL ADVISORY:
NPA will hold a press conference April 25 at the United Methodist
Building, 100 Maryland Ave., NE, 2:30 p.m., on immigration reform. Powerful
stories of immigrants and their allies will be shared as NPA offers an
alternative voice to the anti-immigrant "Hold Their Feet To the Fire"
campaign.
