Company to Feature Innovative, High-Performance Display Products and
Prototypes for Cellular Phones, AV, Automotive, Mobile Computing and
Industrial Markets at Society for Information Display (SID) Exhibition 2005,
                             May 24-26 in Boston

BOSTON, May 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Toshiba America Electronic Components, Inc.
(TAEC)* today announced it will demonstrate an extensive array of new advanced
displays and display technologies developed by Toshiba Matsushita Display
Technology Co., Ltd. (TMD)** for cellular phone, AV, automotive, mobile
computing, and industrial applications this week in booth #2129 at the 2005
Society for Information Display (SID) International Symposium, Seminar &
Exhibition in Boston.
Featured highlights in TAEC's booth include the world's first low
temperature poly-silicon (LTPS) and largest commercially available display
incorporating optically compensated bend (OCB) technology for LCD TVs; a
prototype 3.46-inch QVGA organic light emitting diode (OLED) display; a
prototype 8.0-inch automotive wide-VGA display with light-emitting-diode (LED)
backlighting system; a series of QVGA (240x320) displays for cell phone
applications, and other novel mobile phone display prototypes; a wide-format
line-up of displays for mobile computing applications; a new technology
prototype offering both wide-viewing and narrow-viewing for high-security
applications; and a new line of high-brightness displays for industrial
applications that meet the "green" requirements of the European Union's
Reduction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) Directive.
"These diverse and innovative products demonstrate TMD's ability to supply
customers with a wide array of high-performance, high-quality displays
suitable for many different mobile computing and communications, consumer
electronics, automotive and industrial applications," said Steve Vrablik,
director of business development for LCDs at Toshiba America Electronic
Components, Inc. "The displays shown also showcase the advantages of low
temperature polysilicon, which is TMD's core technology and the basis of our
OCB, OLED and system on glass displays. Characteristics of LTPS include
ultra-high resolution, thin and lightweight design, low power consumption,
durability and a simple structure. As a result, polysilicon (p-Si) is
enabling the evolving digital world today with high pixel-density displays
used in notebook PCs and mobile phones, and is providing the foundation for
our next-generation display technologies." TMD is currently the world's
leading supplier of LTPS LCDs, producing the largest p-Si displays available
commercially, as well as the largest quantity and variety of p-Si displays
shipped worldwide.

    OCB Technology
TMD's OCB technology for LCD displays will be featured in a 32-inch
wide-format LCD TV display. This is the world's largest OCB display currently
in production, as well as the largest p-Si display in production. OCB
technology provides exceptionally wide viewing angles (to 80 degrees) in all
directions, without color shifts or inversions, and provides ultra-fast
response time of less than 5ms (Ton + Toff < 5ms) even during gray-to-gray
transitions. This fast response time is also beneficial in cold temperature
conditions, such as those found in automotive video and navigation
applications. To further demonstrate the fast response time and wide viewing
angle of OCB technology, two 9-inch TV-type LCD displays, one with OCB mode
and the other using conventional twisted-nematic (TN) mode, will be shown for
comparison.
By optimizing the liquid crystal cell structure, improving the bend
alignment of the liquid crystal molecules, and through the use of special
optical compensation films, OCB greatly improves response time, and achieves a
wider viewing angle. TMD has perfected the manufacturing techniques for OCB,
and has developed the industry's first production displays using OCB, the
first of which was a 23-inch wide-format amorphous silicon display developed
in 2004 for TV applications. TMD is evaluating OCB technology for a multitude
of display sizes and applications that may benefit from its performance
capabilities.

    Other Emerging AV Technologies

    3.46-inch QVGA OLED Display
TMD's advanced OLED display technology is represented at SID 2005 by a
3.46-inch QVGA prototype display. OLED displays driven by low temperature
polysilicon offer several advantages over today's conventional LCD
technologies, including self-emitting light; thinner, lighter weight displays
(because no backlight is required); ultra-fast response time and ultra-wide
viewing angles; and high color chromaticity. The 3.46-inch OLED shown in
TAEC's booth will demonstrate the high quality images made possible with this
technology, for use in such applications as portable video and/or media
players where excellent image quality is desired.

8.0-inch WVGA Automotive Display with LED Backlight
TAEC is also demonstrating a prototype of an 8.0-inch wide-VGA (800x480)
color active-matrix automotive display for entertainment and/or navigation
applications that uses a light-emitting diode (LED) backlight instead of the
conventional cold cathode fluorescent lamp (CCFL) backlight system. The
high-resolution WVGA format provides excellent image quality for video and/or
mapping applications, while the LED backlight enables quick start-up at the
low temperatures typically required in automotive applications. Also, LEDs
are mercury-free, thus they will comply with new European RoHS directives for
2006 (though CCFL backlights are currently exempt from the RoHS directive).

    Mobile Phone Market
Leading-edge color thin film transistor (TFT) active matrix cell phone
displays for mobile applications will also be shown, including a series of
QVGA models in 1.9-inch, 2.0-inch, 2.2-inch and 2.4-inch sizes. The QVGA
(240 x 320) format for cell phones provides a high pixel density ranging from
166 pixels per inch (ppi) for the 2.4-inch size up to 209 ppi for the 1.9-inch
size, which enables manufacturers to provide more content on a small screen,
with better text legibility and photographic image quality. The QVGA format
is rapidly gaining share as a global de facto standard for today's high-end
cell phone models.
Two innovative prototypes for cell phone displays will also be shown with
larger viewing areas. The first prototype, a wide QVGA (240 x 400) format in
portrait orientation, provides a 15:9 aspect ratio that, when turned on its
side, enables wide-screen movies and/or photos to be displayed. Secondly, TMD
has developed a unique display with 240x345 pixel format that
demonstrates TMD's capability to offer any optical mode (transmissive,
transflective and/or reflective) for mobile phone applications. In this
prototype, an additional 25 pixel rows (compared to the traditional 240 x
320 QVGA format) are added at the top, using reflective technology to conserve
battery power consumption, so that these 25 rows can be viewed easily in any
light to display status indicators such as signal strength bars and battery
charge indicator. The remaining 240 x 320 area uses transmissive technology
that supports the vivid color image quality users expect from today's mobile
phones.

    Mobile Computing Market
Innovative new display solutions showcased for the mobile computing market
include 15.4-inch WUXGA (1920x1200), 13.3-inch WXGA (1280x800), 12.1-inch WXGA
(1280x768) and 8.9-inch WSVGA (1024x600) displays for wide-format mobile PCs,
a 12.1-inch high-resolution SXGA+ (1400x1050) LCD for Tablet PCs, and a
5.6-inch WSVGA (1024x600) ultra-high resolution wide-format LCD for use in
mini PCs. These wide-format displays are ideal for watching video
applications on PCs, for viewing wider spreadsheets, for viewing multiple
pages side-by-side, or for viewing more windows and more screen content. All
of these displays incorporate TMD's LTPS poly-silicon technology, providing
simpler design, fewer connections with greater reliability, and better power
consumption and luminance performance. Furthermore, TMD has developed a
series of thin and lightweight displays using thinner glass, as thin as
0.3mm at times, to reduce weight and thickness and thus enable
high-portability in the mobile PC segment of the marketplace.

    Emerging Computing Technology
TMD will also show a sophisticated Viewing Angle Control for Privacy (VAP)
technology that provides the ability to selectively switch between narrow and
wide viewing angle modes. For example, if the VAP technology were used in a
typical ATM application, the default screen could be set initially for
wide-viewing mode (with typical viewing angles of 80 degrees left and right).
Then, once the user's card was inserted, the narrow-viewing mode could be
employed, under which the user could still see the information directly in
front of him or her, however, any casual observer standing to the left or
right would see only a black image. This new technology could be utilized in
other similar applications requiring high-security or high-privacy.

    Industrial Market
TAEC will also showcase its diverse line-up of high brightness displays
for industrial applications, ranging from 6.5-inch to 15.0-inch with a
selection of resolutions including VGA (640x480), SVGA (800x600) and XGA
(1024x768). Featured high-brightness displays include
new RoHS-compliant modules well suited for a myriad of industrial environments
and applications including factory automation, test and measurement,
diagnostic equipment, kiosks, medical equipment and point-of-sale (POS)
displays.

    LTPS Enables the Future
The advanced display technology shown by TMD at this year's SID exhibition
demonstrates its continued leadership in the development of high information
content displays through advances in LTPS TFT LCD technology for all sizes of
displays and for a diverse range of applications. The technology enables
higher electron mobility than amorphous-silicon technology, thus allowing for
the patterning of the driver IC circuits directly onto the glass substrate.
Poly-silicon technology can enable an overall reduction in component count by
as much as 40 percent, signifying up to a 95 percent reduction in the number
of connection locations required in the LCD module system as well as allowing
a smaller circuit pitch. All combined, poly-silicon technology provides for
thinner, brighter, lower-power, higher-resolution, less complicated TFT LCD
modules, and it is the forerunner in achieving a true system-on-glass design
in the future. Poly-silicon display technology is also used as the basis for
TMD's OLED displays. TMD recently announced a significant investment of
$500 million to build a new LTPS fabrication facility in Ishikawa Prefecture
in Japan. The new fab is scheduled to begin production in April 2006, with a
capacity of 5.5 million 2.2-inch equivalent pieces per month, using
fourth-generation 730mm x 920mm x 0.5mm thick glass. The new fab will be
dedicated to the production of small- and medium-sized cell phone and
automotive displays, incorporating system on glass (SOG) and/or OCB
technologies, further establishing TMD as the worldwide leader in the
production of LTPS displays, in small-, medium-, and large-sizes.
