New Software, Systems and Services Pave the Way for Self-Managing and
Utility-Based Infrastructures
New Identity Management Products and Self-Healing Capabilities in Solaris(TM)
10 Create the Foundation for Deploying Network Services
SANTA CLARA, Calif. and SHANGHAI, China, June 1 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ --
Sun Microsystems, Inc. (Nasdaq: SUNW) today delivered more than 30 new
technology innovations along with new subscription and utility-based delivery
models at its second quarterly Network Computer '04 (NC04Q2) launch. At the
SunNetwork(SM) Conference in Shanghai, PRC -- where more than 5,000 Asian
business leaders, IT professionals and partners have gathered -- Sun
introduced new products, solutions and services to help customers lay the
foundation for deploying new services over the network while slashing the cost
and complexity of Network Computing infrastructures.
"A new era in Network Computing is now upon us," said Jonathan Schwartz,
president and chief operating officer at Sun. "An era in which the Network is
a commodity available to all and over which innovations will unlock
opportunities for Sun, our partners and customers."
In his opening keynote, Schwartz outlined Sun's vision for building
networked infrastructures based on industry standards and open interfaces,
that allow customers to quickly deploy new services that respond and adapt to
their changing business needs.
"Innovative new technologies and delivery mechanisms will pave the way for
value-added business services to be delivered via the network," said Schwartz.
"Sun is driving this new phase in Network Computing through our
industry-leading systems and by shifting industry economics away from today's
fixed-cost models and making IT more predictable, synchronized and flexible."
Reflecting this vision, Sun today announced new technologies, solutions
and services that allow customers to focus on deriving business benefits from
network services. Major announcements include:
-- New Subscription Models Make Flexible Computing a Reality -- Sun today
announced new technologies, pricing models and services that will move
customers away from today's fixed cost computing standards towards more
flexible subscription and utility-based structures:
-- New subscription-based Sun(SM) Preventive Services offers customers
over 100 different services, integrated into one portfolio,
designed to systematically reduce cost and increase service levels
in the datacenter.
-- Sun(TM) Utility Computing for StorEdge Systems, a new pay-for-use
storage solution, delivers storage capacity when it is needed at an
attractive, predictable price. The cornerstone of the solution is
the Sun StorEdge 9980 array, an industry-leading storage system
that delivers the highest levels of performance, scalability and
capacity for large data center class environments. Pricing is based
on Sun StorEdge Power Units starting at $.02 per megabyte per
month.* Unlike other utility computing models, the Sun StorEdge
"Power Unit" delivers a combination of hardware and software
infrastructure and associated services, including all installation
services, SunSpectrum Platinum support, Sun StorEdge management
portal (w/V240 server) and essential software licenses.
-- The Java(TM) Enterprise Developer Promotion offers Sun(SM)
Developer Network (SDN) program members Sun's Java developer tools,
running on the Solaris Operating System and bundled on Sun's newest
entry-level AMD Opteron-based server, the Sun Fire(TM) V20z, at a
3-year software subscription price of $1499 per year**.

Services -- Sun unveiled major updates to the Solaris
Operating System -- the industry's leading UNIX(R) operating
system. In addition, the company unveiled the second release of the
Java Enterprise System, a new portfolio of Identity Management
products as well as the second release of the industry's
alternative desktop, the Java Desktop System. Sun also announced
that 80,000 users and 30 ISVs are currently previewing Solaris 10
through Software Express, allowing them to implement the latest
technologies in production environments today. Together, these
technologies provide a secure and scalable foundation for the
development and deployment of network services.
-- Attacking Cost and Complexity in the Datacenter and Beyond -- Sun
continues to attack cost and complexity for enterprises and developers
with new features and updates to the Sun Java System along with new
UltraSPARC(R) and Solaris-based systems and solutions:
-- The Dynamic File System, available today in Solaris 10 via Software
Express -- is the industry's only self-healing, self-managing OS
file system technology and provides 16 billion billion times more
capacity than current 64-bit file systems, providing virtually
unlimited scalability.
-- Sixteen new Sun(TM) Reference Architectures and Solutions that
allow customers to gain quicker access to information and improve
business intelligence, advance data center efficiency and achieve
70 percent scale out utilization at a fraction of the cost.
-- New Netra(TM) 440 server -- the industry's lowest-priced,
ruggedized, four-way UltraSPARC server running the reliable,
enterprise-class 64-bit Solaris OS complemented by new NEBS-
compliant storage arrays.
-- Sun Java Enterprise System Release 2 with per-citizen pricing model
for federal, state and local governments and extended support for
the Solaris x86 OS and Linux.
