Program Trains Nursing Professionals from Developing Countries in
Hemophilia Management and Care
BERKELEY, Calif., June 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Bayer HealthCare announced
today the five recipients of the 2007 World Federation of Hemophilia's
International Hemophilia Nursing Fellowship Program. The program is a
Bayer-sponsored initiative that provides state-of-the-art hemophilia
education and training to nurses in developing countries. With
approximately 70 percent of hemophilia patients underdiagnosed and
untreated - most of whom live in developing countries - there is a
significant need for training among nursing professionals who care for
people in these countries living with hemophilia.
"Nurses are vital members of the hemophilia treatment team,
representing the front lines in caring for this patient population and
often functioning as the patient's primary health care contact," said Mark
Skinner, President, World Federation of Hemophilia. "Our program provides
nurses with the advanced tools and skill-sets they need to improve the
lives of hemophilia patients in developing countries where access to
professional hemophilia care is significantly lacking. We truly value
Bayer's strong support in serving as our exclusive partner for this
program."
This year's fellowship winners include:
-- ZHONG Xiao-Hong from Guangzhou, China, will train at the Alfred
Hospital in Melbourne, Australia.
-- Edna Yadira Alleyne Salas from Panama will train at the Hospital
Universitario La Fe in Valencia, Spain.
-- Monica Guadelupe Ante Revelo from Quito, Ecuador, will train at the
Centro Internacional de Treinamento em Hemofilia Dra. Maria Nazare
Petrucelli in Brasilia, Brazil.
-- Bidhaya Rimal from Kathmandu, Nepal, will train at the Ramathibodi
Hospital IHTC in Bangkok, Thailand.
-- Andrea Luiza de Almeida Sambo from Campinas, Brazil, will train at the
National Academy of Medicine in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
The winners will travel to their assigned World Federation of
Hemophilia- designated International Hemophilia Training Centers (IHTCs) to
be paired with a certified hemophilia nurse for four to eight weeks of
clinical and laboratory training. Numerous nursing professionals have
received this prestigious award since the program's inception in 1995, and
have brought much needed skills and training to their communities, serving
thousands of hemophilia patients and their families.
"I am both honored and privileged to be one of the few nurses selected
for this prestigious fellowship," said ZHONG Xiao-Hong, nurse fellowship
award winner from Guangzhou, China. "During this intensive program I hope
to gain the essential tools I need, from the top experts in the hemophilia
space, to best serve my patients - from learning how to perform factor
infusions to finding out how to best educate families about the basics of
hemophilia."
Bayer HealthCare serves as the exclusive sponsor of this World
Federation of Hemophilia initiative, further exhibiting its leadership and
commitment to improving the quality of care for all people living with
hemophilia, including those in developing countries. Through its
Kogenate(R) line of products, the company remains dedicated to the research
and development of treatment technologies designed to enhance patient
convenience and quality of life.
"We would like to congratulate these five talented fellowship
recipients and thank them for their interest and dedication to improving
the standard of care for hemophilia patients around the world," said
Michael E. Mathews, Vice President, Global Marketing Hematology/Cardiology,
Bayer HealthCare. "The WFH International Hemophilia Nursing Fellowship
Program underscores Bayer's own promise to advance care for the global
hemophilia community through education and research-driven initiatives."
