CHICAGO, July 2 /PRNewswire/ -- On Saturday, July 10, 2004 and Sunday,
July 11, 2004 from 11:00 AM until 8:00 PM, the DuSable Museum of African
American History will host the 30th Annual Arts and Crafts Festival. The
event will take place at the Museum which is located at 740 East 56th Place
(57th Street at South Cottage Grove Avenue) in Chicago's Washington Park.
For 30 years, the DuSable Museum of African American History has told our
story by connecting Black art and history through the Annual Arts & Crafts
Festival. To commemorate the 30th anniversary of the festival, visitors to the
Museum are invited to experience the Four Elements that fuse African Art with
our History ... WORDS, ART, MUSIC, DANCE!
Entertainment, a vendor marketplace, outdoor dining and family activities
are all a part of this fun-filled FREE weekend. Maggie Brown, The Fabulous
Kings, Runaway Wordsmyths, the Ravinia Jazz Band and Ayanna Gregory (daughter
of legendary comedian and civil rights activist Dick Gregory) are all
scheduled to provide entertainment for young and old alike.
Traditional African Art reflects the ways of the community. Storytelling,
dance, elaborate masks and clothing play a vital part in nearly all-communal
ceremonies as well as serve as a bond between the members of the society.
Even today the art of those who are of African descent reflects the creative
connections to the ways and history of their community. The DuSable Museum's
Arts & Crafts Festival, which originated in 1974 as a showcase for local
artists is a juried exhibition of fine art and unique hand crafted works which
features artists working in traditional, ethnic and experimental fine arts and
crafts that relate to African-American themes, identity, history and culture.
Admission to the 30th Annual DuSable Museum Arts & Crafts Festival is FREE
and the public is invited. The DuSable Museum is accessible by CTA buses #3,
#4 and #55 and limited parking is also available on the premises.
This program is sponsored in part by Bank One, the Chicago Park District,
CityArts III, Illinois Arts Council, the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur
Foundation, United Airlines, WGCI-FM and WVAZ-FM Radio, the Illinois State
Museum, and the Chicago Defender. For more information, please call
