Students at American Military University, Two Others Will Benefit
CHARLES TOWN, W.Va., Sept. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- American Public University
System students -- currently 11,000 distance learners around the world -- will
soon each have access to 10 free hours of tutoring from a 24-hour online
tutoring center. The University System ( http://www.apus.edu ) is comprised of
American Military University, American Public University and American
Community College.
The program is part of a larger partnership with SMARTHINKING
( http://www.smarthinking.com ). SMARTHINKING is the leading provider of
tutoring and academic support solutions for high schools, colleges,
universities, government, and textbook publishers.
"Our students study in every time zone -- some even study just behind the
front lines," says Alana Boyajian, director of the University System's
academic support and learning resources. "SMARTHINKING helps us support their
studies with first-rate tutors who are available whenever they are needed."
Students can use their 10 free hours of tutoring anytime from Oct. 1, 2004
through Sep. 30, 2005 in subjects such as math, writing, accounting,
economics, chemistry, physics, biology and more. Students can purchase
additional time as well.
"Simply put, our goal is to help our students achieve as much as they can
-- whether it is through life-long learning, better grades or a better
learning environment," says Jim Flaggert, American Public University System
academic dean. "SMARTHINKING will be a vital element in continuing to provide
a better quality education for our students in homeland security, public
safety, the military and other occupations and career paths."
Students log in and receive support from SMARTHINKING's tutors, or
"e-structors," through:
-- Live, online "white board" instruction at scheduled times
-- Emailed questions with 24-hour response times
-- Pre-scheduled sessions -- even the chance to schedule with a favorite
tutor
-- Submission of essays, cover letters and more for 24-hour review
The sessions are archived, so students and tutors can refer to them again
and again.
SMARTHINKING is based in Washington, D.C. It has provided more than
320,000 online tutoring sessions to more than 75,000 students from more than
300 colleges. More than 80 percent of tutors hold a master's or doctoral
degree and average eight years teaching experience.
