- U.S. Consumers Empowered to Lock Down their Credit via Click of a Mouse -
CHICAGO, Sept. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Consumers across the nation have a
new tool in their arsenal against fraud and identity theft. The
introduction of TrueCredit Lock from TransUnion's TrueCredit.com marks the
first time that U.S. consumers have the ability to instantly lock and
unlock their TransUnion credit file to prevent unwanted activity. Once
enrolled, use of the new feature is available to website subscribers online
at no additional charge 24-hours a day, 7-days a week.
"Our services are built around what consumers tell us they need to best
manage their credit health," said Lucy Duni, director of Consumer Education
for TransUnion's TrueCredit.com. "Layered on top of our credit monitoring
services, TrueCredit Lock offers added peace of mind and ultimate consumer
control over access to the credit file. And that's what people want."
While similar to a "file freeze," which is available under certain
state laws, TrueCredit Lock is an independent tool designed to provide
consumers with instant control over access to their TransUnion credit
report for identity theft prevention. After logging on to the
TrueCredit.com site using a secure user name and password, one mouse click
activates or deactivates a consumer's lock feature. "Technology has allowed
us to deliver this capability initially to our online subscribers and we're
pleased to do so," added Duni.
The TrueCredit Lock introduction comes on the heels of an announcement
by parent TransUnion that in October it will become the first credit
reporting company to enable consumers nationwide to freeze their credit
files via either telephone or mail, regardless of whether a file freeze law
has been enacted or is currently in effect within their state. Currently,
more than 30 states have such legislation in place.
