New Program Includes Print Materials and
Animated/Live-Action Home Safety Video
WASHINGTON, Oct. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- As students return to classrooms this
fall, their teachers will have brand new tools to help keep them safe. The
nonprofit Home Safety Council is introducing a free home safety education
program for elementary school children. Produced in partnership with leading
educational publisher Weekly Reader, these materials are being sent to more
than 130,000 teachers nationwide free of charge.
The program materials -- Safety Rangers Say No to Dangers and Code Red
Rover, Grownup Come Over! -- are available to teachers on the Home Safety
Council's Web site (http://www.homesafetycouncil.org/teacher). The Safety
Rangers Say No to Dangers printed materials are being sent to 113,000 teachers
of children in grades one to three and Code Red Rover, Grownup Come Over!, a
new home safety animated/live action video, is being sent to 18,000 second-
grade teachers. These clever new educational tools are the latest materials
prepared by the Home Safety Council to help teachers capture their students'
attention and inspire them to take steps to prevent serious injuries in and
around the home.
According to Home Safety Council research, nearly 20,000 deaths and 21
million medical visits occur on average each year as a result of home-related
injuries. The leading causes of these injuries include falls, poisonings,
fires and burns, choking, and drowning -- all addressed in the new program.
The Home Safety Council is the only nonprofit organization solely dedicated to
helping prevent these hazards.
Safety Rangers Say No to Dangers and the Code Red Rover, Grownup Come
Over! video will help students learn to spot common home dangers and take
action with parents and caregivers to correct them. This latest program is
part of an ongoing partnership between the Home Safety Council and Weekly
Reader that has already produced several award-winning safety curricula for
elementary school classrooms. Safety Rangers Say No to Dangers will be made
available to thousands of students nationwide thanks in part to financial
support from OSRAM SYLVANIA, Lowe's and the Alcoa Foundation, three of the
Home Safety Council's leading sponsors.
"Educators care deeply about the safety and well-being of their students,"
said Home Safety Council president Meri-K Appy. "They need quality materials
to help them extend classroom lessons to include such vital life skills as
injury prevention. The Home Safety Council wants to help teachers share
lifesaving injury prevention information with children and their families ...
without having to reach into their own pockets to do it."
Safety Rangers Say No to Dangers will be in classrooms in September. Led
by the Home Safety Council's mascot Rover, the Home Safety Hound, this free
home safety curriculum teaches children about the importance of safe practices
at home and how to prevent the leading causes of home injuries. Teachers
receiving the print packet will get lesson plans, classroom games and
activities, a take-home letter and a home safety checklist for parents.
The Home Safety Council will debut the new home safety video, Code Red
Rover, Grownup Come Over! in 18,000 second-grade classrooms in September, as
well as online. The 12-minute animated/live action video is available in both
English and Spanish and illustrates important home safety education advice
that students can share with their families. Thanks to an additional
contribution from Nationwide Insurance, copies of the Code Red Rover, Grownup
Come Over! DVD will be available through Lowe's Build and Grow Kids' Clinics
for children during Fire Safety Month in October.
