LAS VEGAS, Oct. 11 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- New York-New York Hotel and
Casino is recipient of the leading 'Healthy Workplace' award from the Nevada
State Psychological Association (NSPA) and the American Psychological
Association (APA). The award recognized the hotel and casino for excellence
in creating and maintaining a work environment that is considerate of the
psychological health of its 2,400 employees.
New York-New York was selected following a comprehensive, five-year study
of work environments at more than 1,000 companies and organizations throughout
Nevada. The NSPA cited the hotel for fostering an environment, through
programs and initiatives, which create a healthy workplace.
Specifically, New York-New York was recognized for utilizing the company's
employee-supported non-profit entity, the MGM MIRAGE Voice Foundation, to
assist two employees with a sick family member. Food, money and other
emotional assistance were contributed from every department within the
company, thus helping alleviate some of the family's emotional and financial
concerns during this time.
With the lessons gained from this experience, New York-New York encouraged
parent company MGM MIRAGE to create the Medical Support Fund so that other
families would have resources should they face similar tragedies in the
future.
Additionally, the NSPA and the APA cited New York-New York for its
corporate diversity and literacy initiatives, tuition reimbursement program
and the establishment of English-as-a-second language (ESL) classes.
"We know that the psychological health of employees is as important as the
financial health of the company," said Lorenzo Creighton, President New York-
New York. "When employees are healthy and happy in their work, productivity
is at its best, enabling us to deliver outstanding service to our customers."
The Nevada State Psychological Association advocates for the profession of
psychology by supporting and training psychologists to provide ethical,
informed, competent services to those in need and the community at large.
Specifically, NPSA strives to provide public education and services, workplace
training, and legislative involvement to promote mental and emotional
well-being of individuals, families and society at-large. NPSA will facilitate
professional contacts, meetings, publications, and training for professional
and academic psychologists, students, and the general public.
