Major PC Manufacturer Launches Collaboration with Leaders in Open Source
FREMONT, Calif., Oct. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Everex, a world leader in the
design and production of personal computers and Koolu, an organization
renowned for their thin client devices and key members of the FOSS
community, today announced a business alliance to further develop and
promote open source, eco-friendly computing products for the mass market.
"Everex is thrilled to be working with a high caliber company like
Koolu," states John Lin, general manager at Everex. "With their expertise
in software and service and our prowess in delivering mainstream computing
products, we feel confident in furthering our many shared initiatives."
As a division of First International Computer, Everex is part of
multi-national conglomerate with a workforce of over 5000 employees spread
amongst six supplier hubs, 10 manufacturing/assembly sites and seven branch
offices. Everex currently ranks as the eighth largest retail computer brand
in the US and can be found in Wal-Mart, Best Buy, Circuit City and Office
Max locations throughout North America.
"We are very pleased to be working with Everex and FIC on introducing
our Internet Appliance into the mainstream marketplace," said Andrew Greig,
CEO of Koolu. "Everex and FIC bring the expertise in high-volume
manufacturing needed to meet the demand for environmentally friendly
systems which we are seeing today."
"I have been interested in easy-to use, environmentally friendly
systems for a long time," said Jon "maddog" Hall, CTO of Koolu. "FIC's
creation of small yet capable systems is perfect for our goal of
easily-maintained, long-life systems based on Free and Open Source Software
that can be the window into the world of the Internet...a system where you
will not spend all of your time and money trying to make it work and keep
it working. A system that can be left on doing useful work all the time and
still be carbon-friendly."
Earlier this year, Everex became the first major PC brand to launch an
open source productivity suite into the US retail channel with
OpenOffice.org.
