DETROIT, Oct. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- DTE Energy will be recognized for its
leadership in promoting the company's GreenCurrents renewable energy
program by the Center for Resource Solutions, one of the nation's leading
environmental organizations. DTE Energy will be presented with a Green
Power Beacon Award Oct. 27 at the 2008 National Renewable Energy Marketing
Conference in Denver for its efforts to increase awareness of renewable
energy options in Michigan.
GreenCurrents provides DTE Energy's 2.2 million electric customers the
option of "greening up" their power with renewable energy created from
wind, biomass and other environmentally friendly sources. Since the
program's inception in April 2007, more than 14,000 customers have signed
up for GreenCurrents, making it one of the fastest growing voluntary
renewable energy programs in the country.
"The Center for Resource Solutions is proud to recognize DTE Energy,
whose continuous efforts are significantly advancing the market for
renewable energy," said Arthur O'Donnell, executive director of the Center
for Resource Solutions. "Through its GreenCurrents program, DTE Energy is
showing its commitment, innovation and dedication in supporting the fight
against climate change."
To help promote its new renewable energy program, DTE Energy utilized a
grassroots campaign which included participation and partnerships with
numerous community events and organizations. A particularly successful
venture was with the Ark, a landmark music venue in Ann Arbor, where
electricity for select events was offset by renewable energy. Concert-goers
were encouraged to sign up for GreenCurrents, and to date almost 2,000 Ark
attendees have enrolled in the program.
"DTE Energy is honored to receive this recognition for our efforts to
grow the GreenCurrents renewable energy program," said Trevor Lauer, vice
president of retail marketing for DTE Energy. "Michigan is a very
environmentally-sensitive state, and we are extremely happy that our
customers have responded to our grassroots marketing effort and embraced
the benefits of renewable energy."
The Center for Resource Solutions co-sponsors Green Power Leadership
Awards in conjunction with the U.S. Department of Energy and the U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency. The awards recognize outstanding
commitments and achievements in the green power marketplace.
Under the GreenCurrents program, DTE Energy's Detroit Edison electric
customers can select a renewable energy option that best fits their budget.
For as little as $2.50 extra a month, residential customers can purchase a
block of renewable energy that's equal to 15-20 percent of a typical home's
monthly electric usage. Customers also can choose to match 100 percent of
their home's electricity consumption with renewable resources by paying an
extra $10 to $15 per month for a typical household.
Business customers can purchase 1,000 kilowatt hours of green energy
for an extra $20 a month -- or match all of their electricity usage with
renewable energy for an additional cost of two cents per kilowatt hour.
