Federally Funded Tutoring Program Helps Students Attending Struggling Public
Schools Across Region
NEW YORK and NEWARK, N.J., Nov. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Platform Learning Inc.,
a national provider of supplemental educational services (SES) to students
attending struggling public schools, today announced that it will launch its
2004-2005 SES tutoring program in four Northern New Jersey cities this fall.
Beginning this month, Platform Learning will offer its
Learn-to-Succeed(SM) tutoring program to students attending public schools
identified as "in need of improvement" in Newark, Paterson, Irvington and
Jersey City. Under the No Child Left Behind law, these students are eligible
to receive federally funded tutoring services from approved SES providers.
Currently, more than 70 public schools in these four cities are identified as
"in need of improvement," and more than 44,000 students are eligible for SES
programs within these schools.
More than 40 sites throughout the Northern New Jersey region will offer
Platform Learning's program this fall, providing tutoring to more than
3,000 students. This represents a major expansion from the Company's
2003-2004 program, which provided SES tutoring to approximately 1,000 students
in the city of Newark.
"We are excited about the growth of our Northern New Jersey operations,
which will allow us to reach thousands more students in need of academic
enrichment services," said Eugene V. Wade, Jr., Platform Learning Chairman and
CEO. Wade, who has spent the past decade working to improve the academic
performance of low-income students, recognizes that many students are not
provided the tools necessary to succeed. "As one of the largest SES providers
in the region and in the country, we strive to make a difference in the lives
of the students involved in our program by providing them with the resources
and support they need to succeed academically," Wade added.
Platform Learning will commence its programs in November of this year,
providing approximately 50-60 hours of instruction for each student enrolled
throughout the 10-12 week program. Platform Learning will also be launching
programs in January of 2005. Parents interested in enrolling their child can
call 1-877-21-LEARN (53276) to determine if their child is eligible.
Founded in March 2003, Platform Learning is an approved SES provider in
more than eighteen states with operations in more than nine major metropolitan
regions across the country. Last fall, Platform Learning launched its
services in several states throughout the Northeast, including Massachusetts,
New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. The Company served more than
14,000 students in over 90 sites during the 2003-2004 school year and plans to
serve significantly more this fall.
Platform Learning's Northern New Jersey effort is being led by a strong
team with a unique combination of national education, management and
operations experience. The Northern New Jersey team includes Mr. Ramon
Dourado, Vice President of Operations for Platform Learning's Atlantic
territory, Erika Ellison, Director of Development for the Northern New Jersey
region and Wayne Fisher, Director of Operations for the Northern New Jersey
region, bringing a breadth of education management and operations experience
to Platform Learning's Northern New Jersey program.
Platform Learning's Learn-to-Succeed program is a federally funded
tutoring program designed to improve student achievement through the use of
curricula and methodologies that have a proven track record of effectiveness
in core subject areas, including literacy and math. Through the program,
students receive tutoring in small learning groups of six to eight students
per instructor. Platform Learning's experienced instructors create a personal
learning plan for each student that identifies the student's specific learning
needs and key learning objectives.
Veteran education leaders Eugene V. Wade Jr. and Juan Torres founded
Platform Learning to provide professional tutoring to students attending
struggling public schools. The Company collaborates with parents, schools,
community organizations, and educators to implement its Learn-to-Succeed
program. The program is offered after-school, on weekends and during the
summer at locations that are convenient for parents and students. The program
design is based on the Company's proven approach, Believe. Achieve.
Succeed.(SM), which helps students increase their self-confidence, improve
their academic skills, and establish a foundation for learning that they can
build upon throughout their lives.
