DETROIT, Nov. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Today the Development Corporation of
Wayne County and Community Development Advocates of Detroit (CDAD)
announced a partnership designed to provide capacity building technical
assistance grants to community development corporations in Wayne County.
The grants will be awarded through a competitive application process open
to community development organizations in Wayne County.
The DCWC is a non-profit corporation of Wayne County created to support
community development. CDAD is a non-profit trade association of community
development corporations that provides assistance to its members as they
build affordable housing, revitalize neighborhoods and improve commercial
corridors. Applications for the capacity building grants are available at
the CDAD office, 2727 Second Ave., Suite 303, Detroit, 48201. The
application deadline is December 4, 2006.
"CDAD is pleased to work with DCWC to provide capacity building support
for community development organizations," said CDAD Executive Director
Regina Strong. "Our mission is to support the activities of community
development corporations. Wayne County's support of neighborhood
revitalization is important for the strengthening of communities in Detroit
and throughout the county."
According to DCWC Executive Director Darrell Garth, DCWC was created to
support Wayne County's neighborhoods, particularly as it relates to
affordable housing opportunities. "We want to impact the affordable housing
market to make sure that the maximum number of Wayne County residents can
take advantage of the various projects," said Garth. "We are anxious to
begin the capacity building process to further our goal of making
affordable housing opportunities available to the citizens of Wayne
County."
CDAD members share a common commitment to community-based sustainable
development, which is grounded in grassroots participation and empowerment.
The organization's mission is to increase the effectiveness of CDCs in
their efforts to revitalize and rebuild Detroit's communities by providing
a vehicle for information sharing, technical assistance, advocacy and
common action on issues affecting its members.
The Development Corporation of Wayne County was formed in August of
2005 to promote community development activities in Wayne County. It
entered into a grant agreement with the county to administer approximately
2.6 million in county funds, to be used to support other non-profit
community development organizations. The funds were specifically targeted
for predevelopment and capacity building activities. To date, DCWC has
provided pre-development funding for fourteen community development groups
in Wayne County.
