HOUSTON, Dec. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Shipcom Wireless Inc., a leading global
provider of RFID solutions and Tatung Company of America, Inc. announced today
that they have successfully shipped out cases tagged with RFID/EPC labels to
meet its Wal-Mart mandate, using the CATAMARAN product of Shipcom Wireless.
One of the top personal computer and related products suppliers of Wal-Mart is
requiring that its contract manufacturers apply RFID tags on all cases being
shipped to Wal-Mart.
This project is an end-to-end example of using RFID in the supply chain.
Each case at Tatung is labeled with an EPC tag containing the product
information. The cases are put on pallets, which in turn are EPC tagged, and
commissioned. This data is then supplied to Wal-Mart.
This project, started early in the year, has many unique features: first
is the quick integration that CATAMARAN (R), Shipcom's RFID edge server,
allows to Tatung's enterprise system; second, is the switch to the use of
96-bit tags from 64-bit tags after the project started; and finally, the
aggressive timeline that was required to meet the mandate.
"Shipcom really understood the EPC/RFID requirements and Tatung's ERP
integration. The Shipcom team was able to meet the rigorous timeline, and
work with the Tatung team to meet all our challenges," said Chris Chu,
Director of Information Technology at Tatung. Tatung has expanded the use of
the RFID case tagging process from one site to two sites with multi-production
lines.
According to Abeezar Tyebji, CEO of Shipcom Wireless, "In the Tatung
implementation, we again proved the speed, flexibility and adaptability of the
Shipcom CATAMARAN(R) EPC/RFID solution. We not only met the Wal-Mart mandate
in record time, but also had a very robust interface developed to Tatung's ERP
system. We thus created an end-to-end EPC/RFID solution that includes best
practices for improving manufacturing and SCM processes. These process
improvements result in better business decisions, often resulting in cost
savings and increased profits."
