Efforts Propel 2009 Total to More Than 35 Tons
HONOLULU, June 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Schools in Hawaii showed they know
what it takes to recycle more than 16 tons of outdated Hawaiian Telcom
Yellow Pages Directories during the "Think Yellow, Go Green" Recycling
Contest hosted by HYP Media Finance LLC ("HYP Media"), the official
publisher of the Hawaiian Telcom Yellow Pages. This year's recycling
program took place on the islands of Hawaii, Kauai, Lanai, Maui, and
Molokai. More than 50 schools participated in the program during the month
of May. Students were encouraged to participate in the contest and the
schools that collected the most directories per student won cash prizes.
The phone books collected by the schools were transferred to
participating island recyclers, including Orchid Island Rubbish and
Recycling, Maui Disposal, Garden Isle Disposal, Makoa Trucking and Lanai
Trucking. These recycling partners then transported the directories to
Island Shell LLC in Honolulu -- where Shell is processing the directories
and turning them into usable recycled materials, from insulation and
roofing to mulch.
"We are so pleased with the strong participation from schools and with
the overall response from the community," said Scott Szczekocki, division
manager for HYP Media. The 16 tons of outdated directories collected in the
contest, combined with 19 tons of phone books collected earlier this year
in Oahu, make for a total of 35 tons of directories collected in HYP Media
sponsored recycling drives in 2009.
Recycling is one of the key underpinnings of the company's proactive
environmental commitment. The company also invests in green and
source-reduction practices such as:
-- Safe Printing - Using soy-based inks and water-soluble glue;
-- Smart Paper - Publishing with paper which contains at least 40 percent
recycled content, and
-- Non-Print directories - HT has invested in a commitment to offering
user-friendly online directories, CD-ROM directories, and downloadable
directories.
"We are committed to bringing environmental, social and economic
benefits to the places where we live and work, and to offering a broad
array of advertiser and consumer options to the communities we serve,"
added Szczekocki.
More specifically, says Szczekocki, the company is committed to
providing consumers with options for the official Hawaiian Telcom Yellow
Pages, from print and online directories at to downloadable versions.
"Consumers look for information in many ways, and we want to ensure that
they have the local information they need in the format they want -- and
that we continue to be sensitive to environmental concerns along the way."
