National Policy Forum Set for June 14-15 in Washington, D.C.
'The Impact of Immigration on the New American Dream'
WASHINGTON, June 6 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- "Searching for the New
American Dream" is the theme of the Labor and Employment Relations
Association's (LERA) 7th bi-annual National Policy Forum set for June
14-15, 2007 at the Hotel Washington, located one block from the White House
at 15th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue in downtown Washington, DC. A
workshop at the conference will examine "The Impact of Immigration on the
American Dream." This panel will describe (1) the U.S. labor force
demographic trends with respect to immigration, (2) an overview of the
"immigrant movement" that spread across the country last year and its
political implications for labor relations, (3 perspectives on immigrants
in low-wage jobs and their labor market impacts, and (4) the value of trade
unions to immigrants and the value of immigrants to trade unions. Speakers
include: Fred Feinstein, University of Maryland, Ana Avendano, AFL-CIO,
Marielena Hincapie, National Immigration Law Center, and Rakesh Kochhar,
Pew Hispanic Center.
The two-day national policy forum, examining how the old American dream
has changed and exploring what form the new dream might take, will feature
Congressional Representatives Rush Holt, (12th District, New Jersey) and
Loretta Sanchez (47th District, California), Reg Weaver, President of the
National Education Association, Thomas A. Kochan of the Massachusetts
Institute of Technology, and Beth Shulman, author of The Betrayal at Work,
as keynote speakers, along with workshop leaders and panelists drawn from a
cross section of leaders in academia, business, unions, government and
policy organizations. Attendees will be provided a unique opportunity to
participate in the public policy dialogue concerning some of today's most
pressing issues, including:
