SKY Leads in the Largest HD Launch in Brazil
|
SKY Brasil Announces 10 High Definition Channels (HDTV)
SAO PAULO, April 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Today SKY announced the launch of
its new high definition service, SKY HDTV. It is the largest launch of
channels in high definition made at the same time by a pay TV provider in
Latin America. The HD system was launched in Brazil by the terrestrial
broadcasters TV in December 2007, but until now, has only been available in
15 cities. Other cable TV providers have also launched the system but in
fewer than 20 cities. With this launch, SKY will simultaneously reach 5,000
cities in Latin America's largest country.
There are 10 channels featuring HD programming, 24 hours a day, every
day, in a list containing the following network channels: Discovery Theater
HD, FOX-NatGeo HD, ESPN HD, MGM HD, TNT HD, Voom HD, Space HD, HBO HD, HBO
and SexZone HD (adult). Seven of these channels are original programming in
Brazil, have different programming than the corresponding SD (Standard
Definition) channels, and will only be available through this provider.
The launch of the SKY HDTV service provides continuity to the business
model SKY introduced three years ago where the equipment, in this case the
advanced technology HD receiver (set top box), will be provided to the
customer at no extra cost.
The new SKY HDTV set top box will be available to any customer
subscribing to the new service. The equipment provides a safer, more
intuitive system, one that has some exclusive functions in the pay TV
market, especially that which allows the customer to watch and record
content in high definition.
"I am very proud of this launch. After a long merger process (SKY and
DIRECTV), leading this market is vitally important. For the first time, we
will be able to provide 1,800,000 customers with a product/service that has
no equal in the Brazilian market," says Luiz Eduardo Baptista, SKY
President.
SKY is the largest digital pay TV service operator in Brazil and one of
the largest in Latin America, with approximately 1,800,000 100% digital
subscribers, which represents one third of all paid TV subscribers in this
country. The company is controlled by DIRECTV Group, which holds
approximately 74% of the shares, and by Globo Comunicacoes e Participacoes
(Globo), with approximately 26% of the shares.
