Path is Cleared for Historic Pinkerton Union Election; New National Union of Security Professionals Scores Major Legal Victory

    FLINT, Mich., Oct. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- On Friday, October 11, 2002, the
National Union of Security Professionals (NUSP) won a major "victory for
democracy" when the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) in Detroit, Michigan
agreed that NUSP is a bona fide labor organization that is not under the
control of any other union -- immediately clearing the way for a historic
union election among almost 1800 Pinkerton security officers at more than
70 GM-related plants around the country.
In August, 2002, over 1000 Pinkerton-employed SPFPA (formerly known as the
"Plant Guards Union") members around the country have voiced their hope for a
new, democratic union in their workplaces, by signing authorization cards for
NUSP (National Union of Security Professionals.)
"Within ten days of Michigan-based officers filing for an election,
members began to come forward from units around the country. SPFPA has
betrayed the trust of its members from coast-to-coast," says NUSP organizer
Adam Wilson.
Ginell Neitzke, a GM Pinkerton Officer in Flint and new NUSP member says:
"Both my grandpas were sit down strikers in Flint, and they taught me that the
squeaky wheel gets the grease. If you want something, you have to step up and
do it yourself."

SPFPA Ignores Issues and Focuses on Fear
"Ironically, rather than address underlying issues like poor pay and no
voice at work, response to all this has been three months of intimidation,
threatening phone calls, assault, theft and slashed tires. This is a security
officers union and their paid staff and elected leaders are running around the
country intimidating people. It's an embarrassment and insult to the officers
at large. But with the continuing support of the Prewitt Organizing Fund,
democracy and NUSP will prevail."

The NUSP is supported by resource grants from the Prewitt Organizing Fund.
POF is a non-profit organization focusing exclusively on helping workers
organize unions to make improvements at work. POF often works directly with
particular unions on organizing campaigns and at other times spearheads
independent projects that are not connected to any particular union. The
National Union of Security Professionals campaign is a result of many security
officers around the country realizing the need for a national union of
security officers that represents its members' interest.
