Report Calls for Increased Foreign Language Proficiency for All Ohioans
COLUMBUS, Ohio, Oct. 29 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Ohio Language
Roadmap, a report that calls for increased foreign language proficiency for
all Ohioans, was released on Thursday, October 25 at Metro High School in
Columbus before a standing room only crowd of more than 150. Ohio was one
of three states selected by the U.S. Departments of Defense, Commerce and
Labor to help refine the nation's policy on foreign language proficiency.
The other two were Oregon and Texas.
A group of more than 20 volunteers from the public and private sector
worked for six months to develop the following recommendations:
-- Establish an Ohio Language and Culture Service Center (LCSC).
-- Create a networking organization that brings together public and
private groups with a stake in cross-cultural understanding and
communication.
-- Develop extended sequences of foreign language study as early as pre-
school.
-- Train, license and employ more teachers, especially those educated in
the use of technology, and develop networked programs around these
teachers.
-- Assess foreign language learners' ability to communicate effectively.
Business and government leaders see an increase in foreign language and
cultural proficiency as a critical component to the continuing
transformation of the state's economy. As Ohio continues to compete
globally, increased foreign language competency is an essential skill.
Additionally, the state's multi-cultural population is fueling the need for
increased foreign language and cultural proficiency. The Roadmap volunteers
will now work with the public and private sector to implement the
recommendations.
The 2007 U.S. Language Summits: Ohio Roadmap to Language Excellence is
sponsored by The Language Flagship with support from the U.S. Departments
of Commerce, Defense and Labor as well as The Ohio State University Chinese
Flagship Program, the Ohio Department of Development International Trade
Division and the Educational Council. The full report is online at
