ISRA Launches Firearm Training Initiative

SPRINGFIELD, Ill., Jan. 25 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The following was
released today by the Illinois State Rifle Association (ISRA):
The ISRA is pleased to announce the launch of an exciting new firearm
training initiative designed to heighten safety awareness, and build
shooting skills. The program keys on women who are interested in learning
to handle handguns safely as well as improving their accuracy under combat
conditions.
Initial program sessions are scheduled for February 3 and February 17
at the Chillicothe Sportsman's Club, Chillicothe, IL. Additional sessions
at other locations across the state are being planned and will be announced
as those plans firm up. For more information on the Chillicothe sessions,
contact Richard Pearson, +1-815-635-3198.
"The demand for handgun training, especially among women, has increased
dramatically over the past year or so," commented ISRA Executive Director
Richard Pearson. "I think the public, especially women, continue to feel
uneasy over September 11th. Another motivating factor coming into play is
the issue of concealed carry. Illinois is one of only two states that do
not allow qualified citizens to carry defensive firearms. A lot of people
are optimistic that the General Assembly will finally see the light and
pass concealed carry here in Illinois. When concealed carry legislation is
finally passed in Illinois, there will be a rush on approved training
classes. The folks that have been calling our training division want to
jump the gun, as it were, and get trained up before the rush."
"Of course, the foundation of all our training is safety," continued
Pearson. "Our students will receive intense instruction in how to safely
handle both revolvers and pistols. More advanced coursework will include
methods for using a handgun to effectively engage one or more assailants."
"We're confident that this seedling of a program will bloom into a
statewide training effort," said Pearson. "We have plenty of qualified
instructors and a host of facilities in which to run the program. Our
students will be well prepared to accept the responsibilities that go along
with a concealed carry license."
The ISRA is the state's leading advocate of safe, lawful and
responsible firearms ownership. Since 1903, the ISRA has represented the
interests of over 1.5 million law-abiding Illinois firearm owners.
