2008 Olympic Torch Relay to Make Only U.S. Stop in San Francisco
RICHARDSON, Texas and RIDGEFIELD PARK, N.J., Aug. 10 /PRNewswire/ --
Samsung, Presenting Partner of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Torch Relay,
launches today its Samsung Mobile Phone Samaritan program to reward
Samaritans with an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to carry the Olympic
Torch.
Samsung is kicking off its Mobile Phone Samaritan program as a
Presenting Partner of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Torch Relay. This is an
opportunity for any person who has exercised quick thinking during an
emergency situation by using a mobile phone to call for help to be rewarded
for their heroics.
"As more and more people carry mobile phones, more people are enabled
to help someone out in a critical situation," said DJ Oh, President and CEO
of Samsung Electronics America. "In addition to knowing that they did
something good for someone else, Samsung is giving these Mobile Phone
Samaritans a chance to be rewarded with the prestigious honor of carrying
the Olympic Torch."
To nominate yourself or someone you know as a "Mobile Phone Samaritan,"
visit http://www.samsung.com/torchrelay between now and September 12, 2007
and tell us your story in 100 words or less. Entries should describe how a
mobile phone was used in an emergency situation to help someone else.
Entries should exemplify the immediacy and mobility benefits of mobile
phone technology in an emergency situation, as well as a gesture of
kindness and compassion toward another person.
"Nine years ago I had an insulin reaction while on a hike with my
kids," said Mark Bishop. "My eight-year-old son Mike quickly called 911 and
got help for me. Two years ago, he carried the Torch in Italy and it's an
experience he will never forget."
A panel of judges will select five winning entries awarding them with
an opportunity to serve as Olympic Torchbearers in San Francisco, the only
North American stop for the Olympic Torch. Complete rules and eligibility
requirements are available online.
Samsung Electronics has been a Worldwide Olympic Partner in the
