EADS Space Transportation Selects Goodrich for Electro-Mechanical Actuators on M51 Missile Program

PARIS AIR SHOW, June 13 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- The EADS group has
selected Goodrich Corporation (NYSE: GR) as the sole manufacturer of the
actuators for the four stage thrust vector control system on the M51 missile
program. Goodrich previously was responsible for the development and
qualification of the electro-mechanical design of the first and second stage
actuators.
According to Sylvain Prioult, Vice President - Regional, Business and
Military - Europe for Goodrich Actuation Systems, "This award adds to our
growing presence as a supplier in the missiles and launchers marketplace and
demonstrates our ability to deliver a complete power range of actuators with
innovative technical solutions."
The M51 missile program is a French Submarine Launched Ballistic Missile
(SLBM) program employing a four-stage, solid propellant rocket. This will be
the first missile program in the world to utilize high power electro-
mechanical technology for thrust vector control. The actuation system was
developed in partnership with Thales Airborne Systems, with Goodrich leading
the electro-mechanical actuation development and Thales developing the power
electronics.
Electro-Mechanical Actuation (EMA) allows for the complete removal of
hydraulic systems, resulting in lower maintenance through the elimination of
oil leaks, reduced life cycle costs and a reduction in systems weight. The new
actuators on the M51 program use a "Direct Drive" architecture which has
already demonstrated additional benefits of reliability, efficiency, size and
weight compared to other EMA technologies. This technology is also applicable
to other defense and aerospace markets such as space launch, civil and
military aircraft, helicopters, submarines and warships.
Goodrich has developed a wide range of technology options for flight
controls, from conventional hydraulic actuators, to state-of-the-art systems
such as the fly-by-wire military helicopter actuators and electro-hydraulic
primary flight controls on the Airbus A380.
