Olympics Bring Home Gold with Web Users; Olympic Athletes Amanda Beard, Amy Acuff and Carly Patterson Enter This Week's List

    Notes of Interest:
    Latin soap opera actress, model and Big Brother Mexico star Michelle Vieth
(#1) continues her reign as the most-searched term on The Lycos 50 for the
second straight week.  Vieth is currently generating 10 times more search
activity than Paris Hilton (#2).  Hilton is now at her lowest rank since she
first entered The Lycos 50 more than 43 weeks ago.

    Other Notes of Interest:
    The Olympics (#2) struck gold with Web users this week, attaining their
highest rank since the summer Olympics made it all the way to number one on
The Lycos 50 during the week of Sept. 26, 2000.  Also making this week's list
for the first time ever are Olympic athletes Amanda Beard (#12), Amy Acuff
(#26) and Carly Patterson (#38).  Searches for Beard are up 780 percent over
last week, while searches for Patterson rose 405 percent and searches for
Acuff are up 362 percent.  Though shy of making this week's list, searches
also rose 362 percent for U.S. swimmer Michael Phelps.  In its year-end list
of most-searched terms for 2003, The Lycos 50 predicted Patterson would be
"one to watch" in 2004.  Meanwhile, Acuff's Web popularity is also on the rise
partly due to her current appearance and Olympic cover story in Playboy
Magazine.

    Hot Trend, One to Watch, Crochet Ponchos:
    All season Free Crochet Patterns have been rising up the Lycos search
logs. This week, Crochet Poncho Patterns jumped 375 percent over last week.
The most popular crochet-related search terms for the week ending August 21,
2004 are:
