Total Sales

The Company's total sales excluding disposed operations increased each year from 1995 through 1997 due primarily to the store growth program. Retail square footage increased about 4% in each of the last two years.

Comparable Store Sales

Comparable store sales (includes replacement stores and remodels) were lower in 1997 due to food price deflation, increased competitive new store openings and promotional activity. Pharmacy comparable store sales, which are included in the total comparable store sales numbers, increased 11.5% in 1997 and in 1996 and 10.2% in 1995.

Operating Profit

Operating profit, adjusted for unusual items, increased slightly in 1997 compared to 1996. The increase was not as great as in other years due to added expense of new store openings, more competitive markets and lower pharmacy and general merchandise margins during the second half of 1997.
