Our growth in fiscal 1998 in the makeup category came from new products, such as Estée Lauder's Blush All Day, Two-In-One Eyeshadow and Minute Makeup, and Clinique's Superbalanced Makeup, Superlast Cream Lipstick and Quickliner For Lips. Existing products like Estée Lauder's Double Wear Stay-In-Place Makeup and Clinique's Stay True Makeup also contributed to the growth. M A C and Bobbi Brown continued their expansion in international markets. Our 1997 acquisitions of jane, a color cosmetics line aimed at young consumers, and Aveda, whose makeup is distinctive for its plant-derived ingredients, provide us with growth opportunities in the future.
NEW PRODUCTS DRIVE MAKEUP As in the past, new products drove our makeup growth in 1998. Major new entries included Estée Lauder's Blush All Day, Two-in-One Eyeshadow and Minute Makeup; Clinique's Superbalanced Makeup, Superlast Cream Lipstick and Smudgesicles; and Prescriptives' Exact Matchstick Foundation and Lavish Lipsticks. M A C introduced two best-sellers - Lipglass and Pigment Colour Powder - and Bobbi Brown created more classic products requested by consumers, like Garnet Lip Shimmer, Bone Eye Shadow and Buff Lip Gloss.
NEW COLOR BRAND FOR TEENAGERS Our acquisition of jane, the fast growing color cosmetics brand for teenagers, marks our first entry into the self-select channel. With a complete line of face, lip, eye and nail products, jane has already grown from 8,000 doors in the U.S. to 12,000. jane's new Lickety Stix Double Gloss more than doubled its lip gloss business and new Hot Tips Nail Polish pushed jane to the growth lead in the nail color category.
