Since the first store was opened in Charlotte 40 years ago, Family Dollar has expanded rapidly from its base in North Carolina. During the last ten fiscal years alone, 1,744 new units, representing more than 50% of the stores in operation have been added to the chain. The 366 new stores in fiscal 1999 include 39 in Texas, 25 in New York, 24 in Ohio, 20 in Pennsylvania, 19 in Indiana and 18 in Kentucky. They also include the first stores opened in Arizona.

More than 3,300 stores now operate in 39 states and the District of Columbia, ranging as far northwest as South Dakota, northeast to Maine, southeast to Florida and southwest to Arizona. Store expansion will continue to play a major role in Family Dollar's profitable growth, and both existing and new markets offer great opportunities for expansion.Plans for fiscal 2000 are to open approximately 400 to 425 stores and close 50 stores, to bring the number of stores in operation to between 3,674 and 3,699 by August 26, 2000.
